THE MAKING OF MADAYAW
The Dream
May 21,
2007 - Monday
Bro.
Merlindo Tinapay and Bro. Charlie Te had a coffee break at the latter’s office in
Toril, Davao City . As they talked about Masonry, Bro.
Te shared with Bro. Tinapay his lifelong dream for Masonry to organize a Lodge
to flourish in Toril area and build a Masonic Temple
for use as meeting place for the brethren residing or working in Toril and
nearby areas. Bro. Tinapay agreed with him and both of them started to endeavor
to make this noble dream a reality.
Bro.
Tinapay and Bro. Te then invited brethren living in Toril District and nearby
communities to a fellowship to get a feel of the opinion of such brethren on
their dream.
The
Initial Fraternal Fellowship in Toril
June 30,
2007 - Saturday
The
first fellowship among the brethren in Toril and nearby communities was then
held at Banoks Restaurant, infront of Sto. Rosario Church in Toril and the
following brethren were in attendance: Bro. Pedro Lim, Bro. Ernesto Quijada, VW
Rodolfo Panopio, Bro. Jessus Armando Arrieta, VW Alexander Advincula, Bro. Bernard
Malate, Bro. Antonio Alegre, WB George Duran, WB Neil Canedo, Bro. Jose Cassanova,
Jr., WB Ariel dela Cruz, WB Hubertus Hanegraaf, Bro. Rufino Montante, Bro. Max
Calolot, WB Luisito Fortich and Bro. Cirilo Perez.
During
that fellowship, the brethren expressed their unanimous support and
unconditionally commitment to support the plan to organize a Lodge and build a
temple. Before the brethren separated to return to their respective places of
abode, they agreed to hold similar fellowships in the future.
Further Informal
Fraternal Fellowships in Toril
Saturday,
July 28, 2007
Saturday,
September 29, 2007
Two
more fraternal fellowships were then held. One was held at Bro. Te's residence
in Toril during his birthday celebration and another one held also in the same Banok's
Restaurant in Toril.
Community Outreach
Thursday,
December 20, 2007
This
group of brethren then coordinated among themselves and conducted a Christmas
gift giving activity for special children at Bago Aplaya
School for the Visually
Impaired Children. Brethren contributed their personal resources and precious
time to ensure the success of this activity that benefited fifty (50) children.
Third
Fraternal Fellowship in Toril
Saturday,
February 09, 2008
Having
seen the dynamism of the brethren in Toril and nearby area in the several
fellowships as well as in the community outreach, the brethren then convened again
for fellowship at Banok's Restaurant, Toril, Davao City. Unanimous agreement
was made to formally organize into a fellowship club with the goal of gradually
transforming into a Masonic Lodge based in Toril.
The following
main considerations were taken into account as primary reasons of forming a new
lodge in Toril:
a)
Economic
developments in Toril and nearby localities are consistently on upswing for
several years, thus, influx of good men in the area is highly noticeable. Some
of the positive economic
indicators were the following:
- Toril Fishport Operations is operating on a 24/7 capacity;
- Construction of San Miguel Brewery Plant in Darong, Sta. Cruz
- Construction of Plastic Plant at Binugao, Toril
- Negotiation for Purchase of Land from Ayala group is nearing completion for a 15 hectare Sugar Coco Plant - a Korean Owned Company;
- 10 hectare lot at Binugao had been sold already to Lucio Tan Group of Companies for the constuction of manufacturing plant;
- 10 hectare lot adjacent to lot purchased by Lucio Tan, been sold already to the maker of RC Cola for construction of Softdrink plant;
- Negotiation for 50 hectare Shipyard at Brgy. Tagabuli, Sta. Cruz had commenced.
b)
Monstrous traffic situation and road flooding even during slight rain from
Toril going to Masonic Center, V. Mapa
St. ,
Davao City
was getting heavier as the days go by. Elderly
brethren can barely make it in the stated meeting with only a fraction of
strength remaining to stay focused during the proceedings.
The
group then discussed the possibility of purchasing a lot intended for the proposed
future Toril Masonic Center .
After due deliberations, the group decided to cool off the idea for the moment
due to unavailability of funds and the group's impediment to legally own a
property.
The
group then decided to adopt a name for their fellowship club, which name shall
be adopted as the name of the future Lodge to be organized in Toril. Numerous
suitable names were suggested but eventually MADAYAW was the name decided and
agreed upon by the brethren.
Since the
fellowship group was formally organized, the group proceeded in the election of
its officers. The following brethren
were elected to the post.

They then set
their Meeting Schedule to be on second Friday of the every Month.
The name Madayaw Lodge
Madayaw is a friendly greeting from
the Dabawenyo word of “dayaw” meaning good, valuable, superior, or beautiful. A
popular festival of Davao City, Kadayawan derives its root word from Madayaw or
dayaw, a festival, a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gift of
nature, the wealth of culture, the bounty of harvest and a serenity of living.
Madayaw
Lodge seeks to celebrate the beauty of Masonry and its benign teachings and to
propagate the same in the Southern part of Davao City, particularly in Toril
district. Viewed against the backdrop of Mount Apo, the tallest mountain in the
Philippines and the plains of Kapatagan where the Philippine Eagle lords it
over in the skies, Madayaw Lodge celebrates the culture of unity in diversity
in Davao.
First Meeting as a Formal Fellowship
Club
Friday,
March 14, 2008
The
first meeting as a Fellowship Club was held at Banok's Restaurant, Toril, Davao City .
The following were discussed during the meeting:
Bro. Charlie
Te offered his lot along Babisa Subdivision, Toril, Davao City
as the temporary place for Madayaw Lodge to reside with the following terms and
conditions:
a) The group can use the property
for as long as the group desires;
b) No donation of the property is
involved;
c)
Sister Dayan's request that no vigil for deceased member in the property should
be respected
Bro.
Charlie Te further reiterates, that if the group will be lucky enough to be
granted the official blessing from the Grand Lodge of the Philippines MADAYAW
LODGE will eagerly fly high and will settle and have her home in the high
ground along Eden Resort area, a place big enough for the Center with necessary
amenities in the compound suited for an overnight relaxation of the brethren
with the family who wish to have a night rest looking over the city.
VW
Alexander Advincula suggested that the group will start organizing into groups
to solicit resources for the realization of this dream. Bro. Te told the group
that he could possibly produce a solicitation of not less than P500,000.00
should the project push through.
Membership
The brethren agreed to intensify move to
locate and invite brethren in Toril and nearby communities to join the next
meeting.
Relief
Before
closing, the group then passed the sack of fraternal assistance and generated a
total of P5,200.00 for the assistance of VW William Louh who was to undergo
heart surgery.
Second Formal
Fellowship Club Meeting
Friday, April 18, 2008
The
meeting was held at Bro. Charlie Te's residence and several matters were
discussed pertaining to the acquisition of the land for the proposed future Toril Masonic
Temple . Bro. Te informed
the group that Mr. Gross offered his land with an area of 800 square meters
located in front of Don Juan Elem. School
at a price of P1,500.00 per squaremeter. Bro. Te made a counter offer of P1,200.00
per sq.Meter but Mr. Gross has yet to reply the counter offer. Bro. Te then
pledged to donate P300,000.00 as his contribution should the group decide to
pursue the acquisition of the said lot for Madayaw Lodge. He then requested Bro. Tinapay to discuss the
possibility of Bro. Canedo and Bro. Fortich to donate P300,000 each to convince
Mr. Gross to sell the property at such price.
Hibernation and Revival
Unexpectedly,
misfortune struck Bro. Te as his mother became ill and he had to focus on attending
to his ailing mother. No meetings and activities were held until in early
February of 2011, VW William Louh made a deafening clarion call to the brethren
to revive this sublime undertaking and encourage the participation of more
brethren in this endeavor.
When
Bro. Charlie Te knew of the reawakening of his dream for Madayaw Lodge, he
immediately informed Bro. Tinapay that he has acquired a 485 square meter lot
in Toril and he intended to offer it to the brethren for the organization and
use of the proposed future Madayaw Lodge.
With
such support from Bro. Te, Bro. Tinapay immediately organized the brethren
again and meet regularly.
Hence,
on February 10, 2011., the brethren convened again at Kookel’s Restaurant,
Bangakal, Davao City. The brethren initially chose WB Neil Canedo as the
charter Worshipful Master. However, he declined because as incumbent Worshipful
Master of Podomo Lodge 294 he is barred by the GLP Constitution to
simultaneously hold another elective office in another Lodge. After several
consultations the brethren were able to persuade VW Floren Lumo to accept the
position of WM. These were then the officers of Madayaw Lodge:

Endorsements from the
Majority of Lodges in MD RXI-A
Madayaw
Lodge earned the overwhelming endorsements of lodges in Masonic District No.
XI-A. The first endorsement was made by Toril Lodge No.208 after VW Alexander
Advincula, during the Lodge’s stated meeting sometime in early 2008 made a
motion for Toril Lodge 208 to endorse the creation of a new Lodge to be based
in Toril. This was then followed with the endorsement of the other Lodges in
the District, notably, Sarangani Lodge No. 50, Davao Masonic Lodge 149, Digos
Masonic Lodge 198 and Podomo Lodge 294.
